Ever since winning a travel grant as a 17-year-old to travel from the Netherlands through Belgium and Paris to Arles in Van Gogh's footsteps, the contemporary master painter and sculptor Anselm Kiefer has been inspired by the Dutchman's art. Van Gogh has been a profound influence upon the subjects and techniques of Kiefer's monumental paintings and sculptures, which draw on history, mythology, literature, philosophy and science. Published to coincide with Kiefer's 80th birthday in 2025, this book celebrates the power and luminous intensity of both artists' work.

Novelist, poet and politician, Victor Hugo (1802-1885) was a towering figure in French 19th-century public life. The author of Les Misérables and The Hunchback of Notre Dame became a symbol of the French Republics ideals of equality and freedom during his long exile in the Channel Islands. His ink-and-wash visions of imaginary castles, monsters and seascapes may be less well known than his writings, but they inspired Romantic and Symbolist poets, and many artists including the Surrealists; Vincent van Gogh compared them to astonishing things.
This handsome book, the catalogue of an exhibition organised by the Royal Academy of Arts in collaboration with Paris Musées, Maison de Victor Hugo and the Bibliothèque nationale de France, includes new texts by leading authorities on Hugo and reproductions of many of his finest works on paper, from early caricatures and travel drawings to dramatic landscapes and experiments in abstraction. -

The Japanese artist Kawanabe Kyosai (1831-1889), a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, has been described as Japan's first political cartoonist; indeed, the sharp satirical edge to his paintings often placed him on the wrong side of the law. The politically turbulent times in which Kyosai lived are reflected in his riotous images, in which skeletons, demons and ghosts rub shoulders with classically rendered ukiyo-e courtesans. Among his most charming and inventive works are his brilliant depictions of animals - crows, frogs and elephants, among many others - which often stand in for political figures of the day. Kyosai's important place in the art of Japan is here explored in depth by Koto Sadamura, a leading authority on the artist, in this catalogue of the exceptionally rich holdings of the Israel Goldman Collection.

Ka the Kollwitz, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Gabriele Mu nter and Marianne Werefkin are among the exceptional artists associated with the emergence of Expressionism in Germany in the early decades of the 20th century. Each challenged prevailing ideals of feminine identity at a time of great societal change. As women, they were expected to marry and raise a family; some chose to, some did not. As ambitious artists, they wanted to work.
As they rose to these challenges, their art further undermined conventions. Their portraits of children symbolise joy, hope and innocence but also melancholy, tension, curiosity, the passing of time and unfulfilled desire. Their radical depictions of the nude wrest the female body away from the male gaze towards a newfound role, expressive of powerful maternity and female subjectivity. These dramatic modernist compositions, with their fluid brushwork and bright hues, push at the boundaries of form, colour and spiritual meaning. -

The Hispanic Society of America in New York is the vision of Archer M. Huntington (1870-1955). From an early age, Huntington developed an abiding love both of Hispanic culture and of museums and libraries. He resolved to devote his considerable fortune to combining these two passions, and carried out his project so resourcefully that the collections he assembled remain exceptional for their depth and richness, displaying the culture of Spain and Latin America in the broadest sense.
Their scope ranges from the prehistoric era to the early 20th century, including antiquities, decorative arts, Islamic works, manuscripts and rare books as well as superb canvases by Old Masters such as El Greco, Velazquez and Goya. This handsome new publication features an introduction to Archer M. Huntington and the Hispanic Society by Patrick Lenaghan, the Society's archivist, and plates and authoritative catalogue entries on some of its greatest treasures by the Society's curators. -

Michelangelo, Leonardo, Raphael : Florence, c. 1504

At the turn of the 16th century, three titans of the Italian Renaissance briefly crossed paths, competing for the attention of the most powerful patrons in Republican Florence. In January 1504 the city's most prominent artists came together to advise on an appropriate location for Michelangelo's nearly finished sculpture of David. Among them was Leonardo da Vinci, who - like Michelangelo - had only recently returned to his native Florence. In this beautifully designed book, Scott Nethersole and Per Rumberg take Michelangelo's celebrated Taddei Tondo as their starting point, and examine the rivalry between Michelangelo and Leonardo, and the influence of both on the young Raphael. Some of the finest examples of Italian Renaissance drawing are reproduced, including Leonardo's Burlington House Cartoon and studies by Leonardo and Michelangelo for their murals commissioned by the Florentine government for the newly constructed council hall in the Palazzo della Signoria.

The South African artist William Kentridge Hon RA was born in Johannesburg in 1955 and lives and works there to this day. He is internationally renowned for the expressionism of his work in numerous media, among them charcoal, printmaking, sculpture and film, as well as his acclaimed theatrical and operatic productions. As elusive as it is allusive, Kentridge's art is shaped by apartheid and grounded in the politics of the post-apartheid era, and in science, literature and history, while always maintaining space for contradiction and uncertainty.
In a brilliant exposition of Kentridge's output, Stephen Clingman, Distinguished Professor of English at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, undertakes a series of enquiries, of walks around the artist and his practice, through the various layers and linkages, crossings and connections of his art. As he proceeds, he considers Kentridge's themes, explores them and proceeds by association to others. Along the way, overlaps, thought-collages, allusions and assemblages come together to create a connective, dimensional way of thinking inspired by Kentridge's own habits of creation. -
